Good friend goes cold over ‘ruined’ pregnancy reveal
Dear Carolyn: My preschooler was sick and I went to the 24-hour pharmacy late one night for supplies and I observed a good friend buying a pregnancy test. I was at the opposite end of the aisle and darted to the other side so she didn’t know I knew. I mentally crossed my fingers for her because I knew they wanted to have kids, then I mentioned it to my husband. I noticed her mood was very light and happy, but for weeks and weeks I didn’t say anything (of course!).
Then, when she and her husband announced she was pregnant, I congratulated them with such excitement. When they told my husband — at the same party, but in a different room — he blurted out that I saw her buying the pregnancy test.
Now my friend is upset that I stole the story and my husband ruined her joy. She has been cold to me and says she is unsure about our friendship.
First, I did nothing wrong here, it was my husband. Second, is this THAT big of a deal? Third, I’ve apologized sincerely without any conditions. So has my husband. Anything else I can do here? Is my friend overreacting? I’m not great at being out of sorts with a friend.
