If eldest can miss Christmas, hey, why can’t everyone?
Dear Carolyn: I know it’s a bit early for Christmas questions, but the topic is coming up already and I am at a loss. My oldest child has asked if it’s okay to travel over Christmas. I appreciated them asking me; they’re old enough not to need to, so of course I said as much. I did admit I’d be a bit sad, but that wasn’t a reason for them to not have their (important) adventure.
Inside, though, I am very sad. This is my kiddo from my first husband, and the only person I have consistently spent the holidays with for over 20 years.
I had the idea that maybe I should travel, too — with my husband and younger kids. The hang-up here is my mom. She will be silently devastated not to have us around for Christmas. I have siblings, but neither has kids, so “it’s just not the same.”
I guess I’m asking if it’s okay to do what makes me feel better, even if it makes someone else feel worse?
