Lift social media ban on mother-in-law for family peace?
Dear Carolyn: A few months ago, my spouse and I got into a horrible argument with my mother-in-law. I removed her from social media because she has a habit of posting passive-aggressive comments. Think: insulting posts about the “weaker younger generation” and “ungrateful children,” which always seem to appear when a family tiff has started.
Now that we are trying to mend things, I feel hesitant to add my mother-in-law back on the socials. If she uses her social media like a burn book, then I feel this will only fuel my annoyance with her during future arguments. I don’t want to be in a vicious cycle of constantly being angry with my mother-in-law.
However, my main goal is to support my spouse and let her set the pace for interacting with her mother. I don’t want to make the situation worse by refusing a form of contact.
I just don’t know how to bring this up to my spouse or what to say if the mother-in-law inquires why I haven’t lifted the social media ban.
