Wife has tall orders for the spouse who does all the cooking Dear Carolyn: This might be a weird one. I do all the cooking for our family, including meal planning and shopping. This is mostly fine. I like to cook and meal plan, and I can fit weekly grocery store visits in with my workout. My wife is focused on healthy eating, which is not a bad thing, and I try to support her while feeding two teenagers. Here is the issue: A couple of years ago, she subscribed to a weekly organic produce box in an effort to eat more fruits and veggies. This box can be customized, but often we get the default produce. My energy for meal prep is limited by working, managing a house, etc., so I cook mostly easy dishes and one-pot meals. I do my best to incorporate vegetables into those meals, but I cannot make more than one thing per meal, so no side dishes. This has resulted in a backlog of vegetables in the fridge until I throw them out. Wife then gets upset at the waste. I have asked to stop getting the box and offered to buy produce during my shopping trips, but she says no. I have told her I am overwhelmed and if she wants vegetables from the box, then she needs to cook them. She might cook them every couple weeks, but that’s not enough to prevent the backlog. There is no option to reduce the subscription volume or schedule. Today, I threw out three heads of lettuce then stared at two heads of kale that I can’t justify getting rid of but also have no plans for. I’m okay with the situation if she would be okay with the subsequent waste, but she tells me if I would just make side dishes, then we wouldn’t throw out as much. Help! I’m exhausted. — Wilting, Like the Lettuce in My Fridge Introducing Say More, a new advice column from The Washington Post. Carolyn’s been writing her advice column for two decades.
